SLOWHOME Guide to Choosing Curtains

SLOWHOME Guide to Choosing Curtains

Phase 1: Observation (The "Live-In" Period)

Before buying anything, spend 7–14 days observing the window.

  • [ ] Track the sun: At what time does the light hit this room directly? Does it cause a glare on the TV or computer?

  • [ ] Assess privacy: Walk outside at night and look in. Do you need full opacity for privacy, or just a light filter?

  • [ ] Check the drafts: Stand by the window on a cold or windy day. Does the glass feel significantly colder than the rest of the room? (If yes, you’ll need thermal lining).

  • [ ] Listen to the street: Is there noise pollution? Heavier fabrics like velvet or interlined cotton can act as sound dampeners.

Phase 2: Design & Material Selection

Focus on longevity, natural fibers, and how the fabric "breathes."

  • [ ] Order swatches: Never buy based on a digital image. Order fabric samples and tape them to the wall. Watch how the color changes at 8:00 AM, 2:00 PM, and under your evening lamps.

  • [ ] Choose natural fibers: Prioritize linen, hemp, or organic cotton. They age beautifully, have a natural drape, and are biodegradable.

  • [ ] Decide on "Fullness": For a high-quality "slow" look, aim for a width that is to times the width of your window. Anything less looks skimpy and "fast-fashion."

  • [ ] Select the "Drop":

    • Hover: 1cm above the floor (clean and modern).

    • Kiss: Just barely touching the floor (classic).

    • Puddle: 2–4 inches of extra fabric (romantic, old-world).

Phase 3: Hardware & Installation

Invest in hardware that will outlast the curtains themselves.

  • [ ] Prioritize metal or solid wood: Avoid plastic brackets or tension rods that sag over time.

  • [ ] "High and Wide" rule: Plan to hang the rod 4–6 inches above the window frame and 6–10 inches wider on each side. This makes the window look larger and lets in maximum light when the curtains are open.

  • [ ] Check the "Stack Back": Ensure there is enough wall space on the sides so that when the curtains are open, they don't block the glass.

Phase 4: The Conscious Purchase

  • [ ] Consider "Made-to-Measure": If your budget allows, custom curtains are the ultimate slow decor choice. They fit perfectly, meaning you won't feel the need to "fix" or replace them for decades.

  • [ ] Source vintage or second-hand: High-end drapes from estate sales can often be hemmed or repurposed. This adds an instant layer of history to your home.

  • [ ] Think about maintenance: Check the care label. If you aren't a "dry clean only" person, stick to washable linen or cotton blends.

The Slow Decor Rule of Thumb: If you can't decide on a color, go with a neutral, textured linen. It evolves with you, regardless of how you change your art or furniture over the next ten years.
